Back Pain Treatment

For patients experiencing chronic back pain, there are a variety of back pain treatments to help relieve pain associated with inflammation and joint damage as a result of injury, disease or unknown origin. These treatments are typically facet joint injection or epidural steroid injections, depending on the patient’s needs.

The medication injected, usually a steroid, is meant to reduce the inflammation and/or swelling of tissue in the joint space. This may in turn reduce pain, and other symptoms caused by inflammation or irritation of the joint and surrounding structures.

How does an epidural injection work? An epidural injection is a type of back pain treatment that delivers steroids and local anesthetic directly into the epidural space and in the spine. The injection is given to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief for anywhere from several days to several months. Occasionally, an injection may provide permanent pain relief.
